Switching from DI to tap on 18 Mohm purifier

If the building DI water is off or otherwise failing, you can use these instructions to switch the source of the 18 MΩ water purifier from DI water to tap water or vice versa. The water purifier will still provide 18 MΩ water but the filters will not last as long. So, this switch to tap water should be a temporary fix to get you back to work.

Exhaustive Protocol

This is easy. Use the photos and captions below to walk through the steps to switch from DI water to tap water. If you are switching back from tap water to DI water, start at the bottom and work backwards.

  1. Make sure the DI water is actually not working by trying one of the other taps in 303B.
  2. Find a pair of pliers and remove the tap water faucet tip (a.k.a. aerator).
  3. You should see a filter and an o-ring inside the aerator. If not, check the faucet tip for those pieces.
  4. Find the tap water faucet adapter that is stored on top of the 18 MΩ purifier.
  5. Remove the metal fitting at one end of the adapter.
  6. This is the piece that will attached to the faucet first in place of the aerator.
  7. Attached this metal fitting with the o-ring side up. Make sure it is screwing on straight.
  8. Tighten it very slightly but not too much.
  9. Attached the rest of the adapter and then only hand tighten. Make sure the plastic piece is going on straight. Do not tighten with tools.
  10. Turn off the DI water tap.
  11. Use the 18 MΩ dispenser to release excess water pressure.
  12. Remove the lower side of the fitting that attaches the 18 MΩ unit to the DI water tap. These are hand tight. No tools needed.
  13. Attached the 18 MΩ unit side of the tubing to the tap water faucet adapter.
  14. Hand tighten only. Do not use tools.
  15. Turn on the cold water. NOT hot water.
  16. Check for leaks at all locations where you tightened pieces. If you see water spraying or dripping, turn the tap water off and tighten the fitting or remove, check for debris, and reattach.
  17. Happiness!
