_ Chemical SOP Template 2021
[__This is our chemical SOP template. Search for '[__' and '__]' to find text / content that needs to be customized for each chemical.__]
[__In the title of this template page, "Chemical SOP Template 2021" is replaced by the chemical name__]
This chemical standard operating procedure (SOP) and the associated Safety Data Sheet (SDS) are for our safety. Read and understand both documents. If this is a paper copy, check for updated versions on the IsoLab website.
Process
[__What is this chemical used for? What methods or process SOPs use this chemical? Link to appropriate process SOPs.__]
Hazards - SDS
[__Include appropriate hazard pictograms. All are included here for easier creation of specific SOP. Copy and paste hazard statements from SDS.__]
Protection - SDS
Engineering Controls
[__Shall this chemical be used in a fume hood or other controlled space? If fume hood then include - Ensure the fume hood has proper air flow by checking the flow rate on the control panel and / or using a smoke match or wipe to visualize flow. __]
[__If this chemical is a PHS, include: PHS - Statement about specific engineering controls for PHS.__]
Administrative Controls
[__Do you need to close doors, post signs, or tell people that you are working with this chemical?__]
[__If this chemical is a PHS, include: PHS - Statement about specific administrative controls for PHS.__]
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
[__What PPE do you need to wear when working with this chemical?__]
[__If this chemical is a PHS, include: PHS - Statement about specific PPE for PHS.__]
Handling - SDS
[__Keep container tightly closed when not in use. Keep away from incompatible or potentially hazardous chemicals, objects, activity (e.g. flammable liquid and active torch, acid and metal).__]
[__If chemical is PHS include this statement: PHS - Decontamination - Statement about specific decontamination steps.__]
Storage - SDS
In general, [__chemical name__] must be stored [__specific location__]. Use MyChem, the UW EH&S chemical inventory database, to find exactly where in the lab suite this chemical is stored. [__Where in the lab should this chemical be stored (room, shelves, cabinets)? Under what conditions should this chemical be stored (refrigeration, desiccation)? Does it need secondary containment?__]
Spills - SDS
[__ Statement about immediate action.__]
[__Steps to take if exposure occurs. Include PHS as appropriate.__]PHS - Exposure:
- Inhalation - [__Statement from SDS or other source.__] For advice, call UW Employee Health Center (206.685.1026) or the Washington Poison Center (800.222.1222). For emergency help, call 911.
- Skin contact - [__Statement from SDS or other source.__] For advice, call UW Employee Health Center (206.685.1026) or the Washington Poison Center (800.222.1222). For emergency help, call 911.
- Eye contact - [__Statement from SDS or other source.__] For advice, call UW Employee Health Center (206.685.1026) or the Washington Poison Center (800.222.1222). For emergency help, call 911.
[__Is the spill contained? Where is the closest spill kit? How do I clean this up? Read waste section.__]
[__Statement about small or otherwise contained spill with no immediate danger.__]
[__Statement about larger or uncontained spill. Consider this statement going above as immediate action.__]
If you need assistance or advice, use the IsoLab Emergency Contacts sheet.
Consult the EH&S Spill Poster and Exposure Poster
Waste - SDS
[__Does the chemical require a waste container? How to label the waste container. What type of waste container to use? Where to put the waste container when I am finished?__]
[__If you are cleaning up after a spill and have a bag of debris, ensure the bag is sealed and use multiple bags as needed. Complete an EH&S Hazardous Waste Label and adhere it to the bag. Here are instructions for how to label chemical waste containers. Labels are located in a drawer on the west wall of 303B near the door to the hallway.__]
[__Statements when a waste container is required - Put all waste, solid or liquid, into a [__Appropriate Type__] container. Options for waste containers can be found under the west sink in 303B. Complete an EH&S Hazardous Waste Label and adhere it to the bottle. Here are instructions for how to label chemical waste containers. Labels are located in a drawer on the west wall of 303B near the door to the hallway.
[__If the waste is to be picked up by EH&S include - Place the properly labeled container in one of the gray tubs near the hallway door of 303B. Segregate from other waste containers as appropriate.__]
Consult our generalized Chemical Waste Disposal SOP.
