Chemical Hygiene Plan
This is IsoLab's Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP). It belongs to Roger Buick, Eric Steig, Becky Alexander, Katharine Huntington, and Andrew Schauer. The chemical hygiene officer is Andrew Schauer. IsoLab is part of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences and is located in Johnson Hall rooms 302 and 303.
Chemical Hygiene Plan Contents
- Laboratory Safety Manual ↗ - The University of Washington Laboratory Safety Manual (LSM) is managed by Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). Every chemical laboratory in the state of Washington is required to have a Chemical Hygiene Plan and the UW LSM is an effort to standardize much of the plan across campus. It is up the individual Principal Investigators and Chemical Hygiene Officers to link to or supply a copy of the LSM as well as laboratory specific content. The rest of this page provides such lab specific content to IsoLab's CHP.

Emergency Contacts 🔒 ↗ - A variety of contact information that may be useful to you. - Chemical Inventory 🔒 ↗ - MyChem is the UW database for all chemicals on campus and is managed by EH&S. IsoLab's chemical inventory is updated as needed and checked quarterly.
- Standard Operating Procedures - IsoLab's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) represent the source of all methods practiced in the lab, how to use all instrumentation, and how to handle all chemicals. They are given main menu real estate because of their importance.
- Floor Plan - Use IsoLab's floor plan to find important safety items such as personal protective equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, and eye wash stations.
- Laboratory PPE Hazard Assessment Guide - Each laboratory is required to complete a PPE hazard assessment to ensure all active SOPs have the appropriate protection available to lab personnel.
- Safety Data Sheets - SDS - The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200(g)), revised in 2012, requires that the chemical manufacturer, distributor, or importer provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly MSDSs or Material Safety Data Sheets) for each hazardous chemical to downstream users to communicate information on these hazards.
- Emergency Posters - EH&S creates emergency posters that you will see around the lab and probably elsewhere on campus. Digital copies of these are included here for completeness.
- Online Accident Reporting System ↗ - The University of Washington uses the Online Accident Reporting System (OARS) to report accidents, incidents, and near misses.
- IsoLab Personnel Safety Information 🔒 - Use your UWNetID to check your safety records and see other IsoLab personnel only documents.
